An interesting item is for sale on eBay through Sunday, July 4, 2010:
a W.S. Hicks Telescoping Pen/Pencil combo from the late 1800s. The
writing instrument exploits two patents from the era: one for the use
of hardened rubber by Goodrich and one for a novel method of combining
nib pen and mechanical pencil function into one device. Here's the

Woah, that's actually really cool. I like design and it has a pleasant
look and shape to it.
